Ken Shorley
Middle Eastern and Indian Percussion
As a freelance percussionist, Ken has performed with many well-known individuals and ensembles in Canada. He has recently appeared in concert with master South Indian drummer Trichy Sankaran, the Indo-jazz fusion group autorickshaw, the Sanctuary Trio, Toronto's Evergreen Club Contemporary Gamelan, and the Ottawa-based Indian folk ensemble Galitcha. Ken has been featured at the Atlantic Jazz Festival, the Deep Roots Music Festival, the Scotia Festival of Music, the Lunenburg Folk Harbour Festival, the World in Wolfville Concert Series, and on regional and national CBC Radio broadcasts. He has three recordings to his credit: Sekar Alit, a collection of original compositions for Javanese gamelan; Nonagon, a multi-layered drumming album; and Waterwheel, a world-jazz CD featuring percussion, saxophone and cello. Since 1998, Ken has been an instructor with Acadia University’s school of music, where he teaches world music, and hand drumming. Ken has produced two instructional hand drumming DVD’s – Time Zone (2005) with Amercian frame drum specialist Marla Leigh, and Exploring the Drum (2006).
